Presented with the fifty states, Corporationwiki.com is a jump-off point for companies registered within each state. Once you pick your original destination, you can drill down through either the top 15 cities or pick a specific city of interest. This resource is a good starting point when looking up target companies in a geographic area.

For the purpose of this blog, we narrowed in on New Jersey:

We typed in “Garden State Home Improvement Service” and located one LLC registered under that name in Livingston, NJ:

Just because an LLC is located in New Jersey, it doesn’t necessarily mean that it is registered with the State of New Jersey. This site can provide that information, as we learned regarding the Garden State Home Improvement Service, LLC. It filed as a Foreign Limited Liability with the State of Florida:

However, there is more to this story. As an adept investigator you would scratch your head and wonder why anyone would call a Florida business the “Garden State XYZ” instead of the “Sunshine State XYZ.” Since much of the information on CorportionWiki came from the Florida Secretary of State database, when we were searching for New Jersey companies, we decided to dig a bit deeper.

It turns out that the first business was, in fact, registered in New Jersey. Another online tool, OpenCorporatesconfirmed this:

It also confirmed that the Garden State Home Improvement Service, LLC filed in Florida on February 19, 2020 is a branch of the original company, whose filing resides with the State of New Jersey since April 20, 2016.

General Tip: CorporationWiki has not matured into a truly effective tool yet, so it is best to cross-reference with another service. Do keep an eye on it for growth.
