This week, our Timely Tips overview two search tool resources for everything from IP addresses and emails to Bitcoin addresses in places such as the darknet. These platforms can be key for Cyber Investigations activity—uncovering vast amounts of valuable research data. Come on, it’s time to dig in.

Cyber Investigations: ViewDNS.info

ViewDNS.info contains 25 free search tools for locating domain names, IP addresses, emails addresses, and more—tools that help piece together bits of information. ViewDNS.info also includes searches for websites accessible in China and Iran—two countries with strict privacy laws. At the ViewDNS.info website, a grid of search options will appear from where you can upload your of-interest websites or links and locate available data on them. To access and download international data, a package containing domain lists from 54 countries is available for purchase, on top of individually priced packages for specific countries. With ViewDNS.info data is easily accessible and multiple searches can be efficiently performed.

Cyber Investigations: intelx.io

Intelligence X is a European technology company founded in 2018. From the outside, it appears to be a search engine and data archive. However, it has the unique ability to search specific parameters such as domain names, IP addresses, and Bitcoin addresses in places such as the darknet, document sharing platforms, and public data leak documents. A distinctive feature of Intelligence X is an archive of historical data searches (similar to the Wayback Machine at archive.org). This is beneficial when dealing with covert darknet pursuits as the information is ever-changing and often gone before it can be captured.
